But the big news that made people sit up and listen was the announcement that Disney was going to create at least three more live-action movies in the Star Wars franchise, starting with Episode VII, to be released in 2015.
This certainly got people talking. Specifically about the future of Star Wars, how it would change with Disney at the wheel, and who or who doesn't like the announcement.
It got me thinking about how many huge film announcements we've had recently. I think the next three years are going to be the biggest the film industry has seen in a long time.
This year was a fairly decent year, with The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man, Men in Black 3, and The Hunger Games.
But recently it's been a bit of a slump. 2012 saw Pixar's worst film to date: Brave. DreamWorks released Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted. And while that was quite a success, in previous years, DreamWorks has released two or even three huge successes.
The next few years are going to be massive though.
Marvel alone has a huge line-up: With Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: Winter Soldier, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Avengers 2, and Ant-Man all coming out in the next three years, this powerhouse of a studio will be churning out some seriously anticipated movies.
With The Hunger Games' success this year, in the next few years we'll see Catching Fire, as well as Mockingjay - Part 1 and 2.
From Pixar we'll be seeing the long awaited prequel to Monsters Inc: Monsters University, as well as Finding Nemo 2.
DreamWorks has a few big announcements as well, How To Train Your Dragon 2 and 3 are both coming out soon, as well as Kung Fu Panda 3. All highly anticipated sequels.
Illumination Entertainment will release Despicable Me 2.
Sony Pictures will release The Smurfs 2 and 3.
And following The Hobbit, New Line Cinema will release The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: There and Back Again.
Other big movies coming out in the next three years include: The Hangover: Part III, Godzilla, Transformers 4, and X-Men: Days of Future Past.
And that brings us back to Star Wars. Episode VII will be out in 2015, followed by VIII and IX not long after.
So keep an eye out for a while. Big things are going to be happening. I think I'll be spending a lot of my college life in the cinemas.
